Dropbox is a subscription-based service that offers cloud storage, file synchronization, personal computer file hosting, and client software. It was founded in 2007 by MIT students Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi as a startup company, with initial funding from seed accelerator Y Combinator. Dropbox has been headquartered in San Francisco since its founding. As of March 2021, Dropbox has 32 million paying subscribers and 1,sd businesses signed up for its services. In November 2019, Dropbox announced that it would no longer allow new users to sign up for its free basic service, instead requiring them to sign up for one of its paid plans. The move was seen as an effort to increase revenue and reduce costs. However, many users were unhappy with the change and expressed their frustration on social media and other forums. In December 2019, Dropbox announced a new pricing structure for its business plans, which includes a new "Plus" plan that offers more storage than the previous "Business" plan but at a higher price. The new pricing structure was widely criticized as being too expensive and out of line with competitors. In response, Dropbox announced a series of price cuts for its various plans in January 2020. As of March 2021, the cheapest Dropbox plan (Basic) costs $9.99 per month or $99 per year for 2 TB of storage space.
